V is for Veggies ... Fall Veggies!

While most of you in other parts of the country are watching the leaves turn to beautiful shades of Red and Yellow and anticipating the first nip of cool air, I am hanging on to warmer weather as long as I can! This past weekend I pulled out the tired tomato plants that so faithfully supplied us with a bumper crop throughout the summer and cleaned up my small garden patch of weeds and dead plants in preparation for our Fall garden.

The Pepper plants I planted back in March are still going strong so I left those in place.

The Birdhouse gourds I had such BIG plans for, were a disappointment, only producing three gourds. Well, that's not actually true, they produced many more small gourds but they all rotted on the vine when they were just a few inches long. But, I still left the vines in place just in case they get a second wind.

I planted three new tomato plants, knowing I will probably only harvest a few tomatoes before the first frost takes them out. I'm keeping my fingers crossed we don't get a frost before the end of November!

Mr. Bubble loves salad but it's just too darn hot here in the summer to grow lettuce so our Fall garden includes quite a few lettuce plants, four different varieties to be exact. I'm really looking forward to having our own fresh lettuce and hope it does well.

Cucumbers usually do really well here in the Summer but for some reason they were a total bust this past Summer so I'm going to give them a second chance in my Fall garden. I swear these things double in size every night!

I also planted a new Basil plant (I LOVE fresh basil in recipes) and I planted one more Blackberry plant which won't produce till next summer. If you plant a Fall garden I would love to hear what you plant too.

  1. How great to still be growing veggies! I lost most of my tomato crop (cherry and grape variety) to a brazen chipmunk. I hope he had bellyaches every day!! I love your birdhouse gourd...maybe I could try that next year. (Note to self: check Google to see if chipmunks eat gourds!!) I'm soooo enjoying your Pinterest pins...I'd follow you anywhere dear Nan! :D

  4. I haven't planted vegetables in years, but I'm pretty sure this is the recommended time of year where I am in SW Florida. Your post is an inspiration, especially the lettuces and basil. Good luck with it!

  5. I've been thinking about planting an herb garden, and basil would be the big priority.

  7. How nice to have your own veggie plot. I'd love to have a garden where I can plant my own veggies one day. I only have one edible plant growing in my porch and it's basil in a pot.
    Visiting from Alphabe Thursday. :)

  8. What a fun garden!

I am just getting ready to plant my second round of tomatoes, green beans and other warm weather crops.

I plant my peas, lettuce and other cold weather crops in November!

Thanks for sharing your very talented green thumb with us.

    A+
